Presentation

Spectacled bears belong to the species Tremarctos ornatus (Cuvier, 1825), and are considered vulnerable to extinction. They are the only South American bears, and are found only in the Andes mountain range. The small yellow spots on the map below are the places where spectacled bears still exist in the wild.

We currently host two spectacled bears; Sarah and Coxa (Guaxo).

They live in enclosures built for the inauguration of the Zoological Park, on May 1, 1962. These enclosures are small, but have a swimming pool and a dormitory. The safety barrier is a grid, which makes the environment heavy and makes it difficult to see.

The Zoo already has an area reserved for the bears' new home.
